Stone KnowledgeDeciphering Natural Stone Costs and Valuation Factors for Luxury Interiors
Stone Knowledge|Pricing Guide

"Residential stone installation fundamentally breaks down into material costs and fabrication/installation fees. Installation fees are relatively fixed based on surface area and edge processing, meaning the primary price variations stem directly from stone species selection."

In luxury residential design, natural stone remains synonymous with refined elegance. As contemporary architecture evolves toward tailored sophistication, stone applications have become increasingly meticulous. Clients frequently ask how pricing is structured and whether natural stone is prohibitively expensive. In reality, while natural stone spans a broad price spectrum due to global quarry yields and geological rarity, its irreplaceable organic texture makes it a timeless favorite among discerning homeowners.

Slab Dimensions: The Foundation of Stone Budgeting

In wholesale stone distribution, full slabs are inventoried and sold as complete units tied to specific slab numbers. When curating stone, beyond falling in love with a slab's color palette and veining, understanding required project dimensions is key to calculating slab counts.
A standard stone slab measures approximately 300 cm × 180 cm (~58 to 60 sq ft), though dimensions vary depending on raw block extraction. For instance, if a living room feature wall measures 350 cm × 250 cm, two full slabs are required to ensure seamless coverage. Remaining material offcuts can be repurposed for coffee tables, vanity countertops, or threshold saddles.
In scenarios where a wall slightly exceeds a single slab's dimensions—where purchasing an additional full slab feels inefficient—we often advise integrating complementary materials such as decorative fluted panels, titanium-coated stainless steel trims, or bronze mirrors. This approach creates an exquisite, layered architectural border.

Stone Species: Deciphering the Price Spectrum

Natural stone is calculated using the traditional Taiwanese unit of area, the cai (30 cm × 30 cm, equivalent to ~0.09 sq m or 0.97 sq ft). Material prices range from NT$200 to over NT$4,000 per cai. Because a standard 300 cm × 180 cm slab yields roughly 60 cai, single-slab material costs range between NT$12,000 and NT$240,000+.

Three primary factors govern this price variance:

  1. Quarry Yield & Rarity: Supply and demand dictate market value. When rare quarries produce exceptional slabs with intact crystal clarity, origin prices reflect that scarcity. Conversely, abundant commodity quarries supply budget-friendly options, typically priced around NT$200–300 per cai.

  2. Geological Grading: Slabs extracted from a single quarry undergo grading similar to diamonds. Quarry owners categorize blocks into Grade A, B, and C based on crystal density and visual perfection—explaining why the same stone species commands different price points across the market.

  3. Processing & Finishing Standards: Standard domestic supply chains often import raw blocks (gangsaws) to process locally. To guarantee uncompromised quality, CHENHOW MARBLE imports over 80% of its curated inventory as finished, factory-processed slabs from Europe and South America. While international finishing increases logistics costs, it ensures superior surface calibration and mirror polish quality.

Understanding Fabrication and Installation Costs

The installation workflow follows a streamlined timeline: once interior carpentry approaches completion, master technicians conduct on-site laser measurements. Slabs are dispatched from the primary gallery to specialized processing facilities for precision bridge-saw cutting, followed by site delivery, structural mounting, and seam finishing. For residential projects, this process typically spans roughly one week.

Following site measurement, a detailed fabrication quote is generated. Factors influencing labor costs include:

  • Seam Finishing Techniques: Seamless jointing versus color-matched resin grouting.

  • Slab Module Sizes: Larger cut dimensions require additional crew members for safe handling.

  • Site Logistics: Constrained elevator or stairway access requiring specialized crane rigging services to hoist full slabs into high-rise residences.
